‘Little Women’ Marches Towards $100M Offshore

Deadline – Sony’s Oscar winner, Little Women, originally began offshore rollout back in late December 2019, but continued to show off its grit at the international box office this weekend. The Greta Gerwig-directed update on the classic opened in Japan at No. 1 with $495K. In total, on 440 screens in 13 offshore markets, the film’s weekend was worth $760K for a $99.5M overseas cume through Sunday. The century mark should be in the offing with strong play continuing in Denmark, and a China release still a possibility. Gerwig’s modern take on the 19th-century novel was originally scheduled to hit Middle Kingdom movie theaters on February 14, but was caught in the coronavirus crisis which shuttered all of the market’s cinemas in late January.

In Japan, this is one of the first new titles to release as COVID-19 and its forced restrictions ease (an overall trend in the smattering of cinemas that are open around the globe has seen audiences respond to new product — and fresh re-releases). In Denmark this weekend, Little Women was No. 1, down 15% from last session (cinemas have been re-opened there since May 21). The sophomore frame was worth $255K for a 10-day cume of $750K which is comparable to pre-COVID levels and ahead of the January releases in Sweden ($568K) and Norway ($694K) for the same point in time.

The Best Picture Oscar nominee, and a winner for Costume Design, has now grossed over $200M at the worldwide box office (Sony co-financing partner New Regency covered a third of the production). It earlier landed at No. 24 in Deadline’s 2019 Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament. […]

Florence Pugh Covers ELLE UK (June 2020)

ELLE UK – Florence Pugh is having a moment of intense pleasure. Slowly, elegantly, with the tantalising precision of Nigella Lawson, she slices into a glistening ball of burrata. ‘Oh my god! Did you see that…’ It sits in front of her, drizzled in pesto; its contents oozing onto the plate. ‘It was quite sexual, wasn’t it?’ she says. There’s a pause. ‘Don’t tell everyone I said popping cheese was quite sexual.

But eating lunch with Florence Pugh is a sensual experience. Maybe it has something to do with our afternoon being filled with eyebrow-raising innuendo (hers, not mine), or the fact that Pugh’s laugh – a full-bellied growl (she calls it her ‘dinosaur laugh’) – bounces across the restaurant every few minutes. Or perhaps it’s just that Pugh is one of the great sensual artists – someone unfettered by PR fluff; possessing prodigious appetite, bountiful opinion and a rare openness that makes everyone who meets her want to luxuriate in her company.

[…] The restricted living conditions have also been a moment of self-reflection: ‘I was so surprised by how unkind I am to myself! Living in lockdown I found there’s no point or energy in being annoyed at yourself for not reading that book, writing that song or working out that day. I’m teaching myself to find joy as much as I can and ease in these open long days.‘ This means also staying away from Zoom: ‘I’m not in any way tech savvy…I did a live virtual play, In Our Youth a few weeks back and as I was logging in I got the meeting ID number wrong and entered a strangers meeting that THANKFULLY wasn’t starting for another 30 minutes!

When Pugh was a 17-year-old at private school in Oxford, she auditioned for Carol Morley’s film The Falling, about a group of girls who mysteriously keep fainting. Pugh, who excelled in the arts but was never academic, got a main role opposite Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams, who was then still relatively unknown. Despite never attending drama school, it was a star turn from Pugh, who played a promiscuous teenager bewitching all who met her.

During filming, Morley didn’t let the girls watch themselves back on the monitor: ‘I think she didn’t want us to act for vanity, or to know what we didn’t like about ourselves on screen,’ says Pugh. ‘She wanted to keep us as naïve as possible.’ This style of direction has no doubt helped as Pugh’s career has taken off. ‘I’ve never been bothered by the odd things that happen on camera, maybe because of that. I don’t mind my double chins, that’s not the acting part to me.

Earlier this year, Pugh was Oscar-nominated for Best Supporting Actress, following her role as Amy March alongside Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson in Little Women. Greta Gerwig, the film’s director, tells me that Pugh brought her familiar and playful energy to set every day: ‘She instinctively knows how to be in a big family group. She was always the first one in the play-fight, the first one telling a joke, starting a giggle-fest, eating the prop cakes. She had that bubbling-over energy of sisterhood.

Florence Pugh to Star in Olivia Wilde’s Film “Don’t Worry Darling”

VarietyFlorence Pugh, Shia LaBeouf and Chris Pine will star in “Don’t Worry Darling,” an upcoming feature film from director Olivia Wilde.

Wilde will produce the movie, from New Line Cinema, and has a key supporting role, though sources say Pugh’s character is the star. “Don’t Worry Darling” is a psychological thriller set in an isolated, utopian community in the 1950s California desert.

New Line considers the film a high priority, having landed the rights after a heated bidding war due to the acclaim of Wilde’s directorial debut “Booksmart.” Katie Silberman, who co-wrote “Booksmart” and penned the Netflix rom-com “Set it Up,” will rewrite the original script for “Don’t Worry Darling” from Shane and Carey Van Dyke. Catherine Hardwicke is executive producing the movie, alongside Shane and Carey Van Dyke. Wilde and Silberman will produce along with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. Daria Cercek and Celia Khong will oversee the project for New Line.

Pugh recently scored Oscar and BAFTA Award nominations for her performance in “Little Women.” She also received acclaim for her starring role in A24’s horror film “Midsommar.” Pugh, who can be seen next in Marvel’s “Black Widow,” also appeared in Netflix “Outlaw King” and the British miniseries “The Little Drummer Girl.”
